Best way to remove nails from painting frame? The frame was nailed into the canvas.?

Help. I've got this really large beautiful painting. It was done about 40 years ago. Anyway, the frame is wood. I want to remove the frame and replace it. Unfortunately, the frame is nailed into the canvas. How do I do this?Best way to remove nails from painting frame? The frame was nailed into the canvas.?
I am assuming finishing or another type of very small nail or staple was used to affix the frame to the canvas. The best way I've found of removing these types of... mistakes.. is to slide a bitter knife or other non-sharp utensil between the frame and the painting.. carefully prying the nail from the canvas until you can get at it with a pair of needle nose pliers to completely remove the frame. Depending on how rigid the application is.. you may end up actually taking the frame apart to remove the painting.. be sure and place a soft cloth between the utensil you are using to remove the frame and the painting so as not to damage the canvas.. most of all BE PATIENT and work very slowly this is not an easy or quick job. Hope this helps.
